Recent Changes in General Skilled Migration
New Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL)–17 May 2008
There are new twelve occupations have been added to the MODL, including five Computing Professional specializations, Electronics Engineer, Optometrist and Dental Technician, and trade occupations of Binder and Finisher, Landscape Gardener and Tree Surgeon. Permission to work arrangements for student visa holders
From 26 April 2008, people granted student visas will automatically receive permission to work with their visa grant. Most student visa holders will no longer need to apply separately in Australia for permission to work.

Changes to the General Skilled Migration Programme
Changes to the General Skilled Migration programme (GSM) will be introduced on 1 September 2007. People who have made an application for a skilled visa on or before 31 August 2007 will not be affected by the changes.

Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category effective 4 February
Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category which were deferred in November 2006 will be introduced on 4 February. The changes primarily affect the way in which NZIS assess whether an applicant’s job or job offer is ‘skilled employment’, and which qualifications NZIS recognize.

Changes to work permit for International Students
Government of Canada introduces changes to work permits for international students, making Canada more attractive for skilled individuals.
The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, has announced changes to work permits for international students who graduate from eligible programs at certain Canadian post-secondary institutions, making it easier to attract foreign students to Canada.
Effective immediately, and for the first time, these international students would be able to obtain an open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, with no restrictions on the type of employment and no requirement for a job offer. In addition, the duration of the work permit has been extended to three years across the country. Previously, the program only allowed international students to work for one or two years, depending on location.
